In 2009, while living in Mindelo, Cape Verde, I filmed the visual artist Luísa Queirós in her studio. Queirós passed away in 2017 and is a central figure in post-independence Cape Verdean visual arts. Born in Portugal, she moved to Cape Verde shortly before the country’s independence from Portugal in 1975. Queirós described herself as Portuguese by birth and Cape Verdean at heart. Nevertheless, at times she publicly expressed opposition to ill-advised cultural policies, and it is now publicly known that she occasionally spoke about disillusionment and the desire to die.
