Digital file from MiniDv tape, 4:3, 13 minutes and 13 seconds, sound
A voice-over of a text, ‘read’ by an open-source text-to-speech software application, is paired with footage filmed from a hotel window. The text, written in Accra the day after the biennial, consists of my unedited emotional first reflections on issues surrounding my visit to the 9th Biennial of Contemporary African Art in Dakar (2010). A feature of the work is that the text-to-speech software produces unrecognizable sounds when attempting to ‘read’ African language words.
